region free dvd superdrive on os x

It’s annoying that after changing dvd regions for like three times the drive’s firmware locks it to that certain region and refueses to run any other dvd. Fortunately there are a few modified firmware versions cruising around that on some models even speed up burning or read/write dvd-rw! See for yourself:

You need a small app called Region X in order to control the region selection - You need a reflashed drive for this tool to not do any harm to your superdrive (That would be like blocking it entierly, I never tried it actually..)!

  • So first of all find out which exact superdrive model (or whatever is residing in your mac) you have built-in (Apple -> About this computer -> System -> ATA)
  • Check either this site or this one for a suitable firmware. Choose the right one that exactly matches your drive.
  • Then carefully follow the instructions and flash the drive - do not take any action unless you really know what you’re about to do :-)
  • Check your region settings by playing the following dvd iso.

Have fun!
