So it definitely is time to clean up before 2007! Some time ago I encoded my first HD material from my HDR-HC1 to the (new) widescreen DivX format. Exports out of Final Cut (Pro) are fairly easy. Just select export as QuickTime and then choose DivX as codec and set the desired preferences. I especially like the stage6 platform which gives you stunningly fast high-def streaming! See my test material. A small plugin (mac & windows) is needed for playback though.
I do like the HD advances of the DivX codec since storing HD material is not too easy yet (DVD gives you relatively poor quality at high data rates). HD DVD and BlueRay disc still seem too far around the corner despite new drives included in the PS3..
