Disliking the slow Microsoft Office 2004 package running on Rosetta I started to use Pages as primary writing assistant for my Bachelor thesis. A brief overview of what I experienced:

  • + fast writing, styles seem alot easier to handle than in Word
  • + easy handling of basic controls
  • + my document now reached a size of 7MB and 75+ pages, writing & navigating is still fast
  • - key shortcuts like switching documents would be awesomely handy.
  • - missing functionality is the possibility to add more than one table of contents (adding captions for images and a corresponding index seems impossible)
  • - adding graphs functionality is limited to a certain basic range of graphs

Conclusion: Don’t use Pages if your work gets to complex or scientific (Oh well, we could have figured that out before, couldn’t we?). We’ll see what Pages 3 will have to offer!

update

  • - Some chapter numbers like 6.3.2 keep on changing their ranking to ex. 3. upon editing the textblock. Must be some really annoying bug!

    Why not use LaTeX?

  2. LaTeX, the ultimate geek tool!

To be honest, I wanted to focus on writing my thesis rather than spending hours learning the LaTeX markup (initially, I know). Maybe it’s also the attraction towards Mac Software, who knows.

    But good point.

  3. Well, as far as I know it is absolutely no problem to use LaTeX on Apple. I already wrote my Bachelor-Thesis with LaTeX and used it ever since. But you’re right: Learning to handle LaTeX is an investment. The sooner you do it, the bigger the return. But if you just want to write something down there is no need for LaTeX…
    Ups. Am I a geek now? ;-)
