Joost bandwidth usage

The bandwidth usage of Joost is quite constant. Tomato did a nice job in visualizing the in- and outbound traffic. On average inbound speed seems to be around 600kbits/sec whereas upload is more bumpy with 100 - 200kbits/sec. Remember, Joost also transmits while you have your stream paused.

“1 hour of viewing is 320 Megabytes downloaded and 105 Megabytes uploaded, which means that it will exhaust a 1 Gigabyte cap in 10 hours” - Joost

(600 / 7) * 3600 does indeed equal 309 MB

One strange observation I made is the low inbound to the left - Joost has been running for a couple of minutes already (although it was stuttering). Did it pre-buffer some of the content in one of the previous peaks? Or is it even cached from one of my previous sessions (I continued to watch an episode which I had started the last time I fiddled with Josst)?

I couldn’t see any differences in bandwidth usage between full- and small-screen usage (which does make sense, does it?).

  1. Cool to see you’re using Tomato too! :-)

  2. I actually got the tip from you :-)

  3. LOL! Glad I did. Have you upgraded to v1.05 yet?

BTW: how do you create the mirror-like effect in the above pic?
And please don’t tell me it’s done in Photoshop, since it will probably be too heavy for my iBook G4…

  4. The mirror effect is quite dirty:

    - copy file to iWeb, enable “mirror” effect
    - save as transparent .png

Photoshop would be possible as well. I only need to program my own action.
By the way, ever tried CS2 on intel macs? I suppose its even slower than on a G4/G5..

  5. But a better answer always seems to be out there:

  6. Hey, this locks like a heart-rate graph from one of my training rides. ;-) (a special geekiness for all of us.) When can I convince you for a short ride? (I’ll be nice, I promise.)

    Hey There,
Do you have a spare invite perhaps?

I heard of Joost recently and am dying to have a look.

Your help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks a bunch,

    Saim

    Dear Joost beta tester,

I am very interested in Joost TV. I wonder if you send me an invitation for Joost beta. Thanks in advance.

    Regards Leonard Hugo
