update (3.11.07): I’ve been using leopard for some days now and I agree, Leopard does show increased stability and some speed improvements. Fortunately MailTags is now offering a public beta. I also updated Quicksilver to 3813. PC-World is offering a nice category concerning Leopard (and some Vista comparison). What is all the heise fuss about the Leopard firewall (see 1, 2)?
Currently I am not to happy about the left-aligned dock, meaning I don’t understand when Leopard groups stacks in colums or grids (I prefer the stacks). I did find these hints though: dock icons
I did get Cisco VPN to work (since I’m still waiting for VPN Tracker 5 beta..).

This trojan horse seems to be the first, after some proof of concept.
update (28.10.07): My Huawei USB E220 modem works perfectly after reinstalling the drivers. A short trick: insert the SIM into your mobile phone and disable the password lock. You won’t need to start the mobile connect application before each connection instance. I did try ntop for traffic statistics. Somehow it consumes to much CPU usage and is kinda overloaded for my usage scenario. Any better solutions (no, not launch2net)?
Skype 2.7 beta works fast on Leopard.
I must be writing some post now which is totally substitutable.
Anyway, I’m happy to have the gold master of Mac OS X 10.5 on my Macbook (2Ghz, 2GB, first-gen). I do have the following notes to share:
I did choose to install a new OS copy but keep my user specific settings and files (second option, second dialog I guess).
- Parallels 3 works like a charm after a reinstall (OS X doesn’t hang anymore for a couple of minutes after starting a VM)
- only Little Snitch v2 works with Leopard
- VPN Tracker 4 stopped connecting (hang due to some PFS group enabled?)
- MailTags 2 and Letterbox are not supported by Mail as of today
- Quicksilver (3800) works, but shows a dock icon - site is temporarily down.
- Time Machine takes ages to sync..
Besides the new finder and dock features I did not experience any real productivity increase up till now. I must have missed some real new functionality. It seems like more has changed under the hood.
One Comment
Just testing OS X 10.5, but I was surprised by the speed of Leopard on my aging iBook G4 - running from a separate LaCie d2 over FireWire 400!
Now am I going to buy this OS for real or buy me a new Mac next month..?
