I discovered that LocateMe also works on 1.1.2 iPhones without applying any changes. It gives you quite accurate positioning data based on cell tower triangulation (and some DB querying, don’t know the details). It appears to be most effective in cities with high cell phone tower density.
TUAW also got some review up.

  1. Yes, since the last update, the software works pretty well. But there is still the probelm of uncertainity when you are in an area you dont know…

  2. The “Locate Me” Service works by using WLAN/WiFi hotspots and cellphone signal towers to triangulate. Thus it will work quite accurately in Cities (where are many WiFi/WLAN Spots and cellphone signal towers), however out in the country it will become very inaccurate.

As for the firmware thing with “Locate Me”: Seems this is not due to the firmware version, but to the bootloader version. BL 3.9 will have different results than BL 4.6; for me BL 3.9 works much better, but different results have been posted.
