update (29.5.08)
The 12.1.0 update again resolves some issues but as many of you experience the same way, Word is still unusable. I actually see Parallels with an installed Windows XP and Office 2007 consuming less memory and system resources than the native Word..

update (14.4.08)
The 12.0.1 update did solve a couple of problems such as the resize bug and some memory leaks (Microsoft calls them stability improvements). Word still crashes unexpectedly from time to time and uses huge amounts of memory (that’s when your Mac gets so slow and you can’t figure out why because you only have Word and Safari open..). Conclusion? It still sucks. For important stuff get back to basic writing and use your favourite text editor such as TextMate or the cool WriteRoom. It’s all about the content anyway, right?

I was really looking forward to working with the new Office version for Mac. But then I started doing everyday work with Word 2008 and experienced a lagging MacBook (I got 2GBs of Ram..). If I do regular typing and correcting (track changes) on 1MB documents Word regularly hangs itself after an hour or so. Also have a peek at these memory infos. It appears kind of strange to me, that Word uses about 1.2GB whereas Photoshop is happy with 300MBs (while having 12 x 11MB tiffs open).
I am looking forward to some stability updates then.

Completely agree - I opened word today in hopes of writing a quick document and placing a few pictures with tight wrap text around them… in short, I got nowhere… although, I did get to watch the beach ball swirl for a rather long time!
Yeah, I convinced my father to convert from his old fashion PC with the argument that “word for mac is even better than your old word 97″ - wooa I was so wrong
Word 2008 is running so bad on his brand new Macbook Air, either it crashes completely or it just hangs up randomly and makes you look at the, to my dad very familiar “carousel” (while just editing plain text). Especially in compability mode?!
Who the hell invented .docx by the way??
I agree– even using the latest updates it crashes regularly on me when I am using track changes on large documents in compatibility mode (and I agree– how stupid is it that they have to have a “compatibility mode”). I’ve gone back to Word 2004 for now.
Completely agree. Word 2008 has crashed six times in the last 24 hours while I was working on seven different documents. Waste of time & of money. Might start using NeoOffice as a word processor which, by the way, opens Microsoft Works documents while Microsoft’s own Wordl 2008 does not!
