As I already stated in my previous paper, cloud computing appears to be a highly disruptive technology, which is gaining momentum just now. Forrester Research points out that the technology is not yet ready for enterprise usage though for the next two to three years. By design current products are immature for fortune 500 companies according to James Staten. Stability and security issues need to be addressed first. ZDnet outlines cloud-benefits such as increased development speed and lower deployment costs. For the time being big enterprises are mainly using cloud platforms for small development and low-priority business applications. Start ups are actually heavily participating in the test playground.

ZDnet also has a nice comparison of Google App Engine and Amazon Web Services.

John Willis wrote a good post about the demystification of the cloud and introduces an interesting “layered” classification of cloud services. Also see his A-Z list of current cloud-providers.
