It is never too late: With the release of Pwnage 2.0.1 I upgraded my iPhone to 2.0 (with 2.0.1 being current at date, I didn’t proceed with this bug-fix release though, yet).

Overall the new firmware is great due to all the apps in the iTunes App Store. Despite some lags not present in 1.1.4 I quite enjoy the firmware. Some note: Don’t use Big Boss’s Preference tool and its EDGE settings yet, since it completely crashes your phone app. Also note, that the more stuff you install through Cydia (the current Installer.app replacement; everyone’s waiting for a 2.0 version), the more instable your iPhone may get.. At least that was my experience.

I must say, Pwnage is really a nice sexy and easy to use peace of software! They really use the art of mac GUI’s to improve usability.

Please note: If you update from 1.1.4 don’t restore your backup. It saves you alot of stability. Just be sure to send yourself previously created notes by email.. Some nice guides can be found here and here.

FYI: My phone had been previously hacked by ZiPhone to run 1.1.4 and I now “upgraded” to 2.0 on pwage without any issue (search for “ziphoned” on hackint0sh and see what else can happen..). Pwnage also upgraded my bootloader and eliminated so said dirty Zibri hacks.. Who knows what really went on and who stole what from whom..

One annoying change in 2.0 is that you can’t disable EDGE by entering an empty APN, if your carrier is also one of the legit Apple carriers (such as Swisscom in Switzerland). A workaround is to use a custom profile (a newly introduced technique to easily edit seetings on the iPhone, neat, indeed. Create your own e.g. for university VPN with this tool from Apple.) One thing I experienced with the new Cisco IPsec VPN capabilities is, that it does not work with certain VPN settings such as mine at university. The DNS servers don’t get set by DHCP and surfing therefore doesn’t work, grr (although it connects without problems). See here and there.

Mail got alot better. You can now bulk delete, move and add multiple accounts.

Some apps I really enjoy from App Store (free ones):

  • Bloomberg: really astonishing how usefull the iPhone can be (e.g. you can flip the iPhone to browse stock charts in more detail)
  • Midomi, a tool that detects songs by humming or playing a song.
  • 1Password, my favourite desktop password vault. It syncs perfectly with my mac.
  • Remote, a tool made by apple which let’s you control your iTunes library really seamlessly.

Now I’m still waiting for Copy&Paste and some cool video recording app.

  1. I’ve joined the iPhone 3G-community by winning an iPhone about a month ago! ;-)
I know it has VPN to connect to my employers Cisco-enabled network, but I find it hard to get along with the pretty long secret. The tool you mention didn’t make that any easier though…
